Class #6- February 24th, 2011

Class #6- February 24th, 2011

Today, the class started as usual with us posting on Facebook letting Doc Chris know we were here in class today.  Next, Doc Chris spoke about how preproduction is the most important part of video production.  We also spoke about how preproduction and production is happening all over the world.  We discussed how elections is part of preproduction.  Doc Chris also mentioned that Comcast needs to step their game up because their customer service, editorial policy, and internet/cable service is lacking.  I really enjoyed how Doc Chris wanted to play music during in class today.  It made class more fun and laid back.  Doc Chris also gave us our assignment for the week.  The assignment was: Everyone please give your opinion of what is going on in the Middle East with social media, traditional video and cell phone/flip video being used to demand change? How has media impacted these changes? Do you understand why I have you using social media in this class with video and gadgets now?"
The question of "Do we censor video content in America if so why? If not why not?" was also brought up.

We spoke about ethics and critical thinking throughout class.  We also discussed how social media is censored and if thats a good or bad thing.  The influence of social networking is very important nowadays.  Twitter, cellphones, flip cameras and different technological gadgets now help us see the real side of the news.  With these technologies we can see both sides of the story without censors and editing . I would rather to see the raw footage, because it gives a better insight to the event without it being changed for the media.

In all, todays class was about critical thinking and remebering who our audiences are:

  1. Your Sponsers
  2. Your Stakeholders
  3. Your Audience
Then we changed the discussion of class to the progress of our groups.  Doc Chris asked us how our projects were going.  Then Doc Chris spoke about how we need to start calling and contacting the people we are using in our commercials for the stage of preproduction.  I really enjoyed this class and I think Doc Chris did a great job of teaching us about the different ways that critical thinking and ethics tie into how we use video and technology everyday.  He brought up some very good questions and made some very interesting points. In all, I really enjoyed todays class!

Class #5: February 17th, 2011

Class #5:  February 17th, 2011

I was a little disappointed when Doc Chris told us the bad news that we were not going to have class outside today because it is a beautiful day outside today.  Doc Chris then made everything better because he said that Jay was going to come in and teach us how to edit.  Before Jay got into class Doc Chris spoke to us about our groups and our progress.  We spoke about budgeting, marketing, and collaborating.  Doc Chris also explained how it is crucial for us to take our ideas out of this class and use it in the real world.  He spoke to us about how a show should be broken down in a half an hour - 7 minutes- 7 minutes - 7 minutes- 7 minutes. He also discussed how an interview works.  Doc Chris explained that each package is a total of 7 minutes and out of the 7 minutes one minute is used for the introduction and conclusion into a break.  We also discussed commercials.  Doc Chris said that most commercials are 30 or 15 seconds long and your goal is to get 8 minutes worth of commercials.  This should result a charge of $500-$700 for clients to have a 30 second or 15 second spot.  Basically the rest of the class was based on the subject of money and how you can get more money for doing different things. Then, to close Doc Chris said that our goal is to create a quality online show and if we do and reach $2500 and have done everything in class we will have good grades.

Then Jay came in and taught us the first three lessons in Final Cut Pro.  I really enjoyed learning how to edit.  Since I have a background with editing everything seemed to come natural to me, therefore I had a lot of fun learning new interesting techniques.  Jay was very nice and knew exactly what he was talking about.  He also seemed like he enjoyed teaching us and really had a passion for editing. I a glad that we started learning about editing today, because I am the editor and producer for team City Wide.

Class 4: Reflections on Mini Lecture

Class 4- February 10th, 2011

Doc Chris started off todays class with a short lecture about filming, production, proposal, and pitch.  He showed us one type of camera that we will be using in this class, and let us practice with the video camera.  He also told us a little background information about the Kodak HD Video Camera.  He showed us how to use the camera and how to hold it to get the best picture.  Then Doc Chris spoke about some key points about production and pitches.  Doc Chris also spoke about convergence and how todays society and the todays technology convergence is used more and more.  Doc Chris gave us examples of convergence, and he said one of the most common technology that incorporates convergence is smart phones.

Some of the key points were:

-- Intro: Tell them what you want to tell them
   Body: Then TELL them
Wrap Up: Tell them what's in it for them- Tell them what you TOLD them
--You can have one major point- but you should have 3 supporting points to back it up
--Your pitch should be no longer than 5 minutes

Then, Doc Chris went on the Facebook group page and wrote an example for a pitch for Domestic Violence.  We read over his Voiceover concept that he wrote on spot and showed how it works and is effective.  After we read the voiceover, as a class, we negotiated our ideas for the pitch and changed some of the grammar.  We ended up with a script and it only took a couple of minutes.  After the first pitch, Doc Chris came up with three more pitches and we all helped give him our input on the different pitches.  He said first you write down whats in your head, then you break it down and analyze it, and he said you should always be thinking of your three key points.

Doc Chris also spoke about five points for a pitch:

1. Intro
2. Host
3. Show Opening

4. Show Close
5. Outro

February 3rd- Class 3: Reflection

Class Overview-
Todays class started off with the first Judge Doc Chris episode.  He had a new student get interviewed on camera and asked him a couple questions.  After that, the class was mostly a discussion about four different topics.  First we spoke about the first assignment we did dealing with Winston Cigarettes.  We spoke about how everything we did for first assignment dealt with production.  The three parts of product are Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Preduction.  We learned that your show is nothing if your preproduction is nothing.  One must have an idea of which they take and create an outline.  this outline then becomes your script.  When your script is strong your outcome is strong.  The next thing we learned is what happens in Hollywood and the history and how entertainment is general.  The next thing we discussed was how important the hook is.  The hook of the advertisement or product is essential because that is what draws people in.  This results in people remembering the product for a significant amount of time and having a great impact on the society.  We also discussed how it is very important to have a place to post your content so that you can share it with other people.

Today's History Lesson on Hollywood Entertainment:

Doc Chris-
I really enjoyed todays class! Even though it was solely based on lecture and discussing, Doc Chris made it very interesting and interactive.  I enjoyed how he tried to make the class fun and entertaining and played music as well as us writing on the Facebook wall during class.  By writing on the Facebook wall we will comprehend it better, because when we keep writing things it stays with us and we remember it longer.  Doc Chris used Edutainment today, and I can't wait to see what he has in store for us for next week!

Group Meeting-
After meeting with my group today...

Interesting Points From Todays Class-

"One yes can change your life forever... all you need is one."
"It is a producer driven game."
"See a duck say a duck "
