Class #5: February 17th, 2011

Class #5:  February 17th, 2011

I was a little disappointed when Doc Chris told us the bad news that we were not going to have class outside today because it is a beautiful day outside today.  Doc Chris then made everything better because he said that Jay was going to come in and teach us how to edit.  Before Jay got into class Doc Chris spoke to us about our groups and our progress.  We spoke about budgeting, marketing, and collaborating.  Doc Chris also explained how it is crucial for us to take our ideas out of this class and use it in the real world.  He spoke to us about how a show should be broken down in a half an hour - 7 minutes- 7 minutes - 7 minutes- 7 minutes. He also discussed how an interview works.  Doc Chris explained that each package is a total of 7 minutes and out of the 7 minutes one minute is used for the introduction and conclusion into a break.  We also discussed commercials.  Doc Chris said that most commercials are 30 or 15 seconds long and your goal is to get 8 minutes worth of commercials.  This should result a charge of $500-$700 for clients to have a 30 second or 15 second spot.  Basically the rest of the class was based on the subject of money and how you can get more money for doing different things. Then, to close Doc Chris said that our goal is to create a quality online show and if we do and reach $2500 and have done everything in class we will have good grades.

Then Jay came in and taught us the first three lessons in Final Cut Pro.  I really enjoyed learning how to edit.  Since I have a background with editing everything seemed to come natural to me, therefore I had a lot of fun learning new interesting techniques.  Jay was very nice and knew exactly what he was talking about.  He also seemed like he enjoyed teaching us and really had a passion for editing. I a glad that we started learning about editing today, because I am the editor and producer for team City Wide.
