We were asked to see if three different adults were able to finish the phrase "Winston Takes Good..." to see the effects that advertising has on media, and how those effects can last a great sum of time. I decided to ask my Mother (Carol), Father (Salvatore), and Aunt (Sandy) to see if they could finish the phrase correctly. All three of the people I interviewed are non-smokers, but when they grew up smoking was very popular so they all mentioned how they were exposed to Winston Cigarettes since some of their friends smoked.
First I asked my mother to finish the phrase. I had a lot of doubts that she would be able to finish the phrase because she has never smoked in her life. But without hesitation she answered "Like a Cigarette Should". I was very surprised that an advertisement for a product she never used was ingrained in her memory. She said she remembered the phrase because it had a catchy jingle and slogan. She also said that the fact that this advertisement has not been on the air for approximately 40 years, the power of media and advertising is extremely strong. My mom said that it is so strong because advertisers know how to get things to stick in peoples memories so that they will buy their products. Even though its been many years since my mother has heard this slogan, since the advertisement was so catchy she was able to remember it very easily. My mom also mentioned that it is the job of advertisers it to make slogans that stay in your memory. I then asked my mother what her favorite commercial was, and she said the 'Aflac' commercials. She liked these commercials because she likes the fact that the main focus is a talking duck because its funny.
Second, I asked my father if he could finish the statement. He also, right off the bat answered correctly. He remembered this advertisement because he said it was on all the time. He said it would come on a lot during the night when he would watch most of his television. My fathers favorite commercials are the 'Gieco' commercials simply because they are funny.
Thirdly, I asked my Aunt if she could finish the statement, and she was able to finish the statement too. My Aunt has a very good memory so she was able to remember it quick quickly and explained to me how she remembered the commercial very vividly as well. My Aunt has also been a non-smoker her whole life, so it once again showed the effect of a great and powerful advertisement on the people of a society.
In conclusion, I found it amazing that all three of the different non-smoking adults I asked could finish the statement, "Winston Tastes Good... Like a Cigarette Should" even after about 40 years.
Here are a few examples of my Mom and Dad's favorite commercials.
